COMING TO TALK, COMING TO HEAL, COMING TO GROW
COMING TRUE
"I am married to a someone I do love. We have children we adore, and we built a life together that hums along with normal ups and downs. I have also come to realize a truth about myself that I have done everything I can think of to suppress and run away from. This secret that I’ve tried to banish to the recesses of my heart and mind will destroy everyone I love and the life we have if it is brought into the light of day. It may also destroy me from the inside out if I continue to hold it in. I am overwhelmed with fear deep down, and I cannot see any way through this…"
If this describes where you are at in life, you are not the first and will not be the last to find yourself in what seems to be a no-win situation. It is impossible to measure statistics around the number of married people who are deeply in the closet with their true sexuality. It is more common than most realize, however, and men and women all over the world and across all cultures deal with this situation every day. Understanding how and why people find themselves in such a struggle is complex and not quickly or easily explained. Some find comfort in at least knowing that they are not alone in a situation that feels so isolating and unique. The emotional and psychological toll of hiding this reality often becomes overwhelming for all involved, and the consequences of maintaining deception of self and others can have devastating outcomes. Yet, people are more courageous than they realize with a bountiful ability to heal. Stepping into truth does not have to end in complete and utter destruction. That does not mean it is not hard or painful – it is both, but there are ways to move into truth with grace, respect, and dignity for all, which can lead to a better, if not always easier, place in the end.
Individual Counseling
I provide individual counseling to men who are or have come to accept their sexual identity as gay or bisexual, often after living publicly in adulthood as straight. Many married women at some point, and many have children. This transition to self acceptance and choices that may follow is unique and nuanced, and finding professional help with someone well-versed in this process is paramount. I bring more than ten years of experience counseling men in this situation, and it is part of my personal story as well. This work and life experience led to the book I wrote on this subject - Coming True: Seeking Truth in Self Later in Life.
The first part of individual work is taking time to understand how we got here and what is really my truth. The next phase is decision making. What changes, if any, do I need to make. There is not a one-size fits all answer here, and it takes time to really explore all the options. I create a safe space to fully open up and talk through every aspect of this journey. Together we will develop a plan to move forward in truth one step at a time.
Individual Coaching
For anyone living outside of Florida or Georgia, one-on-one video coaching is available for men going through the coming out later process. Coaching is distinctive to counseling in that we focus on today and tomorrow. I provide structure, planning, and motivation as one considers their options. If other issues in the mental health realm appear, I can provide some context and options for seeking professional counseling in your home area. This kind of identity shift holds deep nuances, and it can be difficult to find professionals with the expertise to work through the various aspects involved. Even if you have a counselor you love, feel free to reach out for any additional support focused on the ins and outs of coming true around self and sexuality.
Coaching topics include:
-
Understanding the journey
-
How and what to say to spouse, kids, family, and friends
-
How to manage personal and professional boundaries
-
Dating and Sex
-
Faith Challenges
-
Decision points for change

Group Counseling
"Out Late" is group therapy for men coming out later in life. Sitting with others on this same path can be transformative and incredibly healing. I've run this group for 13 years, and dozens of men have participated along the way. The group dynamic builds community, confidence, and a place of hope during some daunting transitions. In the group setting, we address all aspects of this journey. Some people join before they have ever told anyone about this truth, and some have already come out but want support in developing their new life.
This group is called an open-ended process group. This means you can join anytime and stay as long as it is helpful. We address the here and now in each individual member's lives. Unlike many group offerings, I encourage members to develop friendships beyond the group room, although dating and sex remain a no-no. We meet weekly for 90 minutes at my office in Fort Lauderdale. The cost is $75 per session, and many men find this experience to be invaluable.
If you are interested in joining, give me a call or text at 770-828-5441. I will conduct a free one hour phone interview to assess if this is the right fit for your needs. The group is limited to 6 members, so there may be a waitlist at times. All prospective members must complete the phone interview before going, so reach out as soon as you can.
